The Jericho Reach Crusade

The Jericho Reach Crusade is the Imperium’s ongoing attempt to reconquer the Jericho Reach, a lost sector in the Ultima Segmentum. It’s officially the Achilus Crusade, but troops call it the Dead Crusade because the war has stalled badly against Chaos, Tau, and Tyranids.

Overview

It’s a military campaign launched in 777.M41 to reclaim the Jericho Reach, a region that was once the Imperial Jericho Sector. After centuries of neglect and a period of warp storms called the Age of Shadows, the sector fell to anarchy and Chaos. The Imperium wants it back.

The Crusade’s original commander was Lord General Militant Tiber Achilus, and the campaign still bears his name. When his Grand Cruiser was lost to the Warp after a Gellar field failure, Lord General Militant Solomon Tetrarchus took over. He commands a huge force: Imperial Guard, Space Marines, Titan Legions, and Adeptus Mechanicus, all working alongside the Deathwatch.

Why the Imperium could reach the Reach

For thousands of years, the Jericho Reach was cut off, watched only by silent Deathwatch watch stations. That changed when the Imperium discovered an active warp gate in the Segmentum Obscurus. This gate, the Jericho-Maw Warp Gate, connects to the Koronus Expanse and offers a fast, stable route into the Reach.

Without it, reaching the region would take years of warp travel. The High Lords of Terra approved a crusade as soon as they heard about the gate, hoping to use the Reach as a staging area for further offensives toward the Eastern Fringe and the Tau Empire.

How the crusade is fought

The campaign is split into three salients: Canis, Acheros, and Orpheus. The plan was for Canis to drive straight at the core of the Reach while Acheros and Orpheus swept through the rim, encircling the core and disrupting Tau activities.

Early on, it worked. The Crusade took several worlds from heretics and rebels. Orpheus Salient was the most successful, bringing sixty systems under control. Then Hive Fleet Dagon arrived from the north-east and tore the salient apart. At least half its troops were lost, its leadership was shattered, and nine worlds were overrun.

  • Canis Salient: pushes toward the core of the Reach.
  • Acheros Salient: moves through the rim, including the Cellebos Warzone and Charon Stars.
  • Orpheus Salient: initially the most successful, now gutted by Hive Fleet Dagon.

Who’s fighting, and why it matters

The Imperium faces a mess of enemies. Chaos holds many worlds, including daemon worlds within the Hadex Anomaly at the Reach’s centre. The Tau Empire has colonised several worlds in the south, forming the Velk’Han Sept. And Hive Fleet Dagon keeps pressing in from the north-east.

The Crusade matters because it’s a rare chance for the Imperium to strike back on a large scale. If it succeeds, the Reach becomes a launchpad for further wars. If it fails, the Imperium loses a vital foothold and a lot of soldiers for nothing. So far, it’s been a brutal, grinding stalemate.

It’s the Imperium’s ongoing campaign to reclaim the Jericho Reach, a lost sector in the Ultima Segmentum. It began in 777.M41 and is also known as the Achilus Crusade or the Dead Crusade.

Who leads the Jericho Reach Crusade?

Lord General Militant Solomon Tetrarchus commands it now. He took over after the original leader, Lord General Militant Tiber Achilus, was lost to the Warp.

Why is it called the Dead Crusade?

Because progress has been disastrously slow and costly. The Imperium expected a quick reconquest but ran into Chaos, Tau, and Tyranid resistance that has ground the campaign into a bloody stalemate.

What is the Jericho-Maw Warp Gate?

It’s a stable warp route connecting the Koronus Expanse in Segmentum Obscurus to the Jericho Reach. Its discovery is what made the Crusade possible, since normal warp travel to the region would take years.
