Armatura was a fortress world of Ultramar, and for a while it ranked alongside Macragge and Calth as one of the realm’s most important planets. Then the Horus Heresy came for it, and the Shadow Crusade left it a ruin.
What Armatura was
During the Great Crusade and the Horus Heresy, Armatura sat in Ultramar, inside the Ultima Segmentum. It wasn’t just another holding. It was a military hub: a recruitment and training ground, a shipyard, and an armoury depot for the Ultramarines Legion.
Its population ran into the millions before the invasion. The world had a single moon, called Pila.
Why it mattered
Armatura’s value was strategic, and everyone knew it. The planet was ringed with orbital defence platforms and guarded by a defence fleet, and its garrison was enormous by any measure.
On the ground you’d find the Ultramarines Evocati, thousands of Neophytes, the Legio Lysanda Titan Legion, Mechanicum Skitarii, and possibly as many as a billion Imperial Army and Ultramar Defence Auxilia troops. That’s the kind of world you don’t take by accident.
- Recruitment and training world for the Ultramarines
- Shipyard and armoury depot
- Orbital defence platforms plus a system defence fleet
- Garrisoned by the Evocati, Legio Lysanda, Skitarii and vast Auxilia numbers
The Battle of Armatura
The battle took place in 007.M31, part of the Shadow Crusade that Lorgar Aurelian launched to tear through Ultramar while the bulk of the Ultramarines Legion was tied up at Calth. Lorgar led a Word Bearers contingent alongside a large World Eaters force under Angron, and the two primarchs picked Armatura as a principal target precisely because of what it was.
The void war was supposed to favour the defenders. Then two Abyss-class battleships, the Blessed Lady and the Trisagion, dropped out of the Warp almost on top of the fighting, and the odds flipped. The traitors won. Armatura was devastated, and the casualties on the Imperial side amounted to total extermination.
What the battle left behind
The fighting was brutal enough that both Lorgar and Angron took the field in the thick of it and both came close to dying. It’s also the battle where Angron threw away his axe, Gorechild. Khârn later recovered and repaired it, and it became his weapon.
Armatura itself never recovered. It’s remembered as one of the great losses of the Shadow Crusade, and as a warning about what happens when a fortress world’s defences meet something they weren’t built to handle.
