The Ash Desert is the toxic, ash-choked wasteland covering Necromunda outside its hive cities. It’s where outcasts, Nomads, and prospectors scrape a living, and it’s one of the setting’s most hostile environments.
What the ash desert is
The ash desert, usually called the Ash Wastes, is the desert that surrounds every Necromundan hive. It’s made from millennia of industrial fallout: metal oxides, powdered plastics, and inorganic chemicals, piled miles deep in places.
That ash is corrosive. It eats equipment, poisons most life, and shifts into dunes that can swallow roads and damage hive structures. The landscape isn’t just grey either. You’ll find vivid sulphur yellows and cobalt blues, and the creatures and Nomads living there blend into those colours.
Climate and hazards
Ash storms are the big killer. They can carry toxic ash from the equator to the poles, strip an unprotected person to the bone in seconds, and even destroy whole hives. Storms sometimes uncover ruined spires, then bury them again.
In calmer seasons, liquid pollutants form slick-lakes and blind-rivers. When these dry out, they leave hard crusts over deep dust seas that can be fatal if you break through. Hot weather brings poisonous mists and sudden acid rain squalls.
Who lives there
Ash Waste Nomads are the best-known inhabitants, surviving in the deep desert with adapted gear and mounts. Ironhead Squat Prospectors also work the wastes, hunting valuable mineral pockets.
Above ground, Merchants Guilds, Clan House gangs, and Spyrers all venture out for their own reasons. The wastes hide derelict hive spires, buried convoys, and wrecked vehicles, plus pockets of pure oxides and chemicals worth mining.

- Necromundan Giant Rats
Named regions
The wastes are broken into ecoregions. The Great Equatorial Wastes sit at the hottest band, while the Ash Pole and Stormlands mark the harshest extremes.
Other named areas include the Sump Sea, Poison Sea, Dentium Nautica, Irradium Oceanus, Corpus Navios, Great Spoil, Great Scavic Basin, and Helmawr’s Graveyard.
Ash wastes beyond Necromunda
Necromunda isn’t the only world with ash wastes. Armageddon has its own ash wastes, areas contaminated by industrial by-products, and the Armageddon Ash Waste Militia are specialist Imperial Guard troops raised from there.
So when fans say ‘the ash desert’, they usually mean Necromunda. But the term covers any industrial wasteland in the 41st millennium.
