The Sangua Terra is a former Imperial hive world that’s become one of the most bitterly contested planets in the Nachmund Gauntlet. It’s the linchpin of the Sanctus Wall and a key strategic point in the war for the only stable passage through the Great Rift.
Overview
Sangua Terra sits in the Sanguis System, within the Gorandhal Sub-Sector of Segmentum Obscurus. It was once a thriving hive world, but the opening of the Great Rift turned its system into a daemon-infested warzone. The planet’s equatorial region is permanently scarred by a feature called the Flare Scar, a lasting wound from that catastrophe.
Its importance comes from Blackstone. Like its sister world Vigilus, Sangua Terra holds large deposits of this material, which stabilises the Nachmund Gauntlet as a safe route through the Great Rift. Without it, that vital corridor would collapse.
Why the Sangua Terra matters
The Nachmund Gauntlet is the only reliable way to cross the Great Rift, so whoever controls Sangua Terra controls that passage. Abaddon the Despoiler wants it destroyed, and the Imperium can’t afford to lose it. That’s why the planet became the linchpin of the Sanctus Wall, a defensive network built during the Nachmund Rift War.
In the Era Indomitus, it’s among the most heavily defended worlds in the Imperium. But that hasn’t stopped Chaos from taking most of it. Haarken Worldclaimer captured the capital, Urbanosprawl Alpha, and forced the Imperials to withdraw. He’s still pushing to take the rest.
- Controls the Nachmund Gauntlet, the only stable route through the Great Rift.
- Holds large Blackstone deposits that keep the Gauntlet open.
- Linchpin of the Sanctus Wall defensive network.
- Currently contested between Imperium and Chaos forces.
Key locations and defences
The capital, Urbanosprawl Alpha, is a sprawling hive city now largely in Chaos hands. Other important sites include the Praefectus Bastion, the political and military command centre, and the Emperor’s Voice Grand Battery, an orbital defence gun array. The Tower of Murmation serves as an astropathic choir.
Beyond the cities, there’s Lantis Keep, a northern polar biologis station, and the Urantis Forge, a major factory complex. The moon Sigil has been a Daemon World under the Daemon Prince Tchorr’kan since the Nachmund Rift War. That’s a lot of ground to defend, and the Imperials are stretched thin.

The Sangua-Terran War Council
The Sangua-Terran War Council is a coalition of military and religious leaders formed to stabilise the Gorandhal Sub-Sector after the Great Rift opened. It’s led by Imperial Commander Kalendela Tol, who’s also the current Imperial Commander of Sangua Terra. The Council kept the subsector’s remaining worlds together until contact with the wider Imperium was restored.
Once the Nachmund Gauntlet was discovered, Gorandhal became a priority for sending supplies to Vigilus. But the Council is overstretched, trying to protect its own subsector while meeting those wider demands. Now that Abaddon has sent his forces down the Gauntlet, the heretics are closing in.
The war for Sangua Terra
Sangua Terra has been under attack for decades. It suffered an Ork invasion fifty years ago, then the Great Rift’s birth flooded it with daemons. During the War of Beasts, Abaddon targeted both it and Vigilus to close the Nachmund Gauntlet. At least two companies of the Castellans of the Rift Chapter fought on the surface.
Later, during the Nachmund Rift War, Canoness Superior Junith Eruita arrived to rally the defenders. Reports even placed the Black Legion battleship Planet Killer en route to finish the world off. Haarken Worldclaimer’s invasion was a success: he took much of the planet, including the capital, and the Imperials pulled back. He’s still fighting to claim the rest.
