The 13th Black Crusade

The 13th Black Crusade is Abaddon the Despoiler’s biggest push out of the Eye of Terror, launched in 999.M41. It broke the Cadian Gate, destroyed Cadia itself, and tore a warp rift across the galaxy. If you only know one Black Crusade, it’s this one.

What the 13th Black Crusade actually was

It’s the thirteenth and largest of Abaddon’s campaigns against the Imperium, and by far the most consequential. Where earlier Black Crusades were raids, probes, or grinding stalemates, this one was built to finish the job.

Abaddon’s plan had a name: the Crimson Path. He’d flood Cadia with daemons, overwhelm the pylons that keep the warp calm on the planet, and let the Eye of Terror swallow it whole. From there the rift would spread world by world until it reached Terra.

It kicked off in 999.M41 and pulled in a bigger combined force than anything since the Horus Heresy.

Why Cadia mattered so much

Cadia sits right at the mouth of the Eye of Terror, and its network of pylons is the main thing stopping the warp from spilling into the Segmentum Obscurus. That’s the Cadian Gate, and it’s been the Imperium’s single most important chokepoint for ten thousand years.

Take Cadia and you don’t just win a battle. You remove the lid.

  • Cadia’s pylons suppress the warp across the whole region.
  • Losing the planet meant losing the Imperium’s best defensive line.
  • The Cadian Shock Troops were raised specifically to hold that line.

How the war played out

The fighting spread well beyond Cadia. There were battles at Medusa with the Iron Hands and Space Wolves, secondary invasions across the sector, and a lot of the Imperium’s best commanders thrown into the meat grinder.

Key Imperial figures included Lord Castellan Ursarkar E. Creed, Saint Celestine, Belisarius Cawl, Logan Grimnar, and Inquisitor Katarinya Greyfax. Against them stood Abaddon’s inner circle and a who’s-who of Chaos: Typhus, Ahriman, Lucius, Erebus, and others. The Eldar and even the Necrons got involved, though not as allies of the Imperium.

In the end, Cadia was destroyed. Accounts differ on the exact sequence, but the planet broke and the pylons went with it. Creed is listed as missing in action.

Aftermath and why it still matters

With Cadia gone, the warp poured through. That’s the Great Rift, the galaxy-spanning tear that defines the current era of the setting. The Imperium is now split in half, and the Indomitus Crusade exists largely to deal with the fallout.

Casualties were catastrophic, at least several trillion by most counts. The 13th Black Crusade isn’t just a historical event in Warhammer 40k. It’s the reason the modern timeline looks the way it does.

FAQ

When did the 13th Black Crusade happen?

It began in 999.M41, at the very end of the 41st millennium. It’s the event that closes out that era and opens the current one.

Did Abaddon win the 13th Black Crusade?

He achieved his main objective. Cadia was destroyed and the Cadian Gate fell, which let the warp flood into realspace. He didn’t reach Terra, but the strategic win was his.

What is the Crimson Path?

It was Abaddon’s plan to overload Cadia’s pylons with daemonic energy, turning the planet into a daemon world and using it as a launchpad to expand the Eye of Terror toward Terra.

How is the 13th Black Crusade connected to the Great Rift?

Directly. Once Cadia and its pylons were gone, the warp had nothing holding it back, and the resulting rift split the galaxy. The Great Rift is the aftermath of this crusade.
